IMPORTANT: The Optical Science and Technology Center and Microfabrication Facility are being retired after fall 2018 and their services reconfigured under the new Iowa Center for Research, Exploration, and Advanced Technology in Engineering and Sciences (Iowa-CREATES) and Materials Analysis, Testing, and Fabrication (MATFab) in the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL) in spring 2019. As a result, the OSTC/UIMF site will eventually be taken down. Until then, please visit the Iowa-CREATES Website at, or read more about the new center at

OSTC Seminar "Nanostructured Solar Fuel Generation System"

104 IATL, University of Iowa, 205 North Madison Street

Prof. Syed Mubeen
Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering
The University of Iowa

Abstract: Environmental considerations require the world, to increase, ever more urgently, the renewables fraction of its energy usage. The focus on solar energy will certainly rise, and will include both photovoltaics and the much less well developed goal of using sunlight to convert available feedstocks such as water, CO2 and domestic and industrial waste directly to valuable chemicals and fuels. This talk will introduce my past and current research efforts to develop novel nanomaterials and architectures to convert light energy directly into high free energy materials that can be used as fuels and fine chemicals, thereby storing the solar energy in a high energy density and transportable form.
