IMPORTANT: The Optical Science and Technology Center and Microfabrication Facility are being retired after fall 2018 and their services reconfigured under the new Iowa Center for Research, Exploration, and Advanced Technology in Engineering and Sciences (Iowa-CREATES) and Materials Analysis, Testing, and Fabrication (MATFab) in the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL) in spring 2019. As a result, the OSTC/UIMF site will eventually be taken down. Until then, please visit the Iowa-CREATES Website at, or read more about the new center at

UIMF Hosts K-12 STEM Teachers

STEM K-12 Teachers tour IATL172
Wednesday, June 22, 2016

The UIMF provided tours and tools demos to several K-12 STEM teachers from across the state of Iowa. This was part of the event organized by the UI Kirkwood Regional Center for the Statewide STEM Innovator Teacher Institute. The aim is for the educators to create a model on how to infuse innovation and entrepreneurial skills into their school curriculum. The UIMF tours and demos did just exactly that: by demonstrating the state-of-the-art tools and describing a wide range of research projects in several nanotechnology areas ranging from optics, sensors, micro- and nano-electronics, plasmonics, photovoltaics, spintronics and bio-medical. The UIMF is now in the process of developing concrete plans and mechanisms to engage the STEM teachers in the nano fabrication area by first obtaining hands-on training on the tools and developing content and labs for their own courses in this area in their respective schools.
